META Tag Information

Meta Tags for Search Engines

<meta name="title" content="Description of site" />
<meta name="description" content="Description of Site" />
<meta name="keywords" content="keywords describing site" />
<meta http-equiv="description" content="Description of Site" />
<meta http-equiv="keywords" content="keywords describing site" />
<meta http-equiv="robots" content="index" />
<meta http-equiv="revisit-after" content="14 days" />

The above needs to be placed between the <head> and </head> tags on pages you wish to index in the search engines.

Description of each component.

  • name="title", name="description" and http-equiv="description"

    This is a description of your site. It should be less than 1024 characters. Most search engines ignore the description tag if there is more than 1024 characters. Be as descriptive as possible with as few characters, remember this is what the user of the search engine sees first of your site.

  • name="keywords" and http-equiv="keywords"

    These are the keywords describing your site. Once again less than 1024 characters and the same reason as for description applies. Also again be as descriptive as possible, this is what the search engines check when ranking sites on what the user enters to search for. Keywords are entered in lowercase with a comma between each keyword and a space after each comma. The page also needs to reflect the keywords in its content. There is no point putting a keyword in which does not appear in the general context of the page. Do not use the keyword more than two times.

  • http-equiv="robots" content="index"

    This tells the search engine to index this page.
    Other possible entries for content here are:

    • noindex - do not index this page.
    • nofollow - do not follow links from this page.

    For example to index the page but not follow any links put the following tag in:
        <meta http-equiv="robots" content="index, nofollow">

  • http-equiv="revisit-after" content="14 days"

    This tells the search engine when to revisit the site

    14 days is generally sufficent for most sites. If you are adding extra pages more frequently than this then change it to a lower value eg "7 days".

Remember to include a <title> </title> in the head of your web pages as this is what is shown as the title on the search engine.

Also a <DOCTYPE> tag as the first line of each page, as most search engines use this to determine the language for the page.

Example:

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT META KEYWORDS

    Q) META keywords tag - should I use UPPERCASE, lowercase or a mixture, commas or spaces?
    A) Use lowercase, separated by commas, with a space after the comma.

    Q) If I have several keyword phrases in my META keywords tag that all contain the same keyword, will I get penalized? For example:

    <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="gold jewelry, diamond jewelry, silver jewelry, platinum jewelry">

    This would represent four repetitions of the word 'jewelry'.
    A) I personally do not believe in spamming or putting multiple keywords throughout the page. This is too easy to check for and the search engines are not stupid. If we can think of it they already have. Most engines only count to 2 for keywords, so why waste the keyword utilization. Put in other keywords.

    Q) Will I be penalized for using the same keywords on a lot of different pages that have the same content?
    A) If the pages have exactly the same content, why are they in your site? If they are all related to the same subject, they can logically have the same keywords, but the Description tag would be different.

    Q) What is the optimum number of keywords before the engine gets bored?
    A) It varies. Some are more easily bored than others. I don't usually repeat keywords, maybe twice for the important ones. It's better to show up adequately on all the engines than perfectly on one and badly on the rest.

    Q) Will the engines treat a phrase such as handmade gifts that is written as a keyword phrase the same as if it were written as two different words? Should I write them out both ways?
    A) Use: "hand, made, handmade, gift, gifts" to cover all the possible variations searchers might enter.
